E-commerce packaging machine: what it does and how to choose one
Every warehouse past 300 orders a day asks the same question: add another person to the bench, or buy a machine? This page covers what the machine does, at what volume it makes sense, and what to check before you buy.
Short answer
An e-commerce packaging machine cuts a mailer from roll film to the length of the item, bags it, heat-seals the mouth and prints and applies the shipping label. In warehouses shipping 300 or more orders a day one operator produces 600-900 parcels an hour. The decisive criteria are throughput, bag width range, label integration, safety equipment and service.
What the machine takes over from the packing bench
On a manual bench one order goes like this: pick up the item, choose the right bag size, open it, insert the item, tape it, print the label on a separate printer, stick it on the right parcel, carry it to the cart. That chain takes 25-40 seconds and the label can end up on the wrong parcel at every step.
The machine takes over everything except picking up the item. The operator scans the order barcode and drops the item on the belt. The machine cuts the mailer to length, bags the item, seals it with a heated jaw, prints and applies the shipping label and pushes the parcel onto the conveyor. Time per parcel drops to 3-6 seconds.
At what volume does it make sense?
- Under 100 orders a day: a tabletop bag sealer or a manual bench is enough. A fully automatic system pays back too slowly.
- 300-1,000 orders a day: the machine's home ground. One operator replaces a two- or three-person bench and peak days no longer need temps.
- 1,000-5,000 orders a day: one or two machines with exit conveyors sorted by carrier. Here the gain is accuracy and dispatch time as much as labour.

Six things to check
1. Real throughput
"900 parcels an hour" in a brochure is measured with small flat items. Ask for a figure measured with your own product mix. At a Paketör demo we time your products with a stopwatch.
2. Bag width range
The machine runs one roll width at a time; if your mix needs mailers from 250 mm to 550 mm wide, the jaw must cover that range. Length is cut to the item automatically, so you stock only one or two roll widths.
3. Label integration
The most overlooked point. If you have to enter data into the machine's own software, every order creates a second job. The right approach is to take the label your existing panel already produces (marketplace, ERP, carrier integrator) as PDF or ZPL and print it on the machine's printer. 4. Safety equipment
Any machine with a heated jaw and a moving belt needs a light curtain, two-hand start and an emergency stop. These are not options; they are the minimum.
5. Consumable lock-in
Some systems only run on the manufacturer's proprietary bags. A machine that uses standard perforated mailer rolls halves your consumable cost over time and keeps you free to change suppliers.
6. Installation, training and spare parts
Heating wire, PTFE tape and sensors wear. If they are not stocked in your country you wait weeks. Ask who installs, who trains the operator and whether remote support is available.

How many parcels per hour?
The Paketör PK-220 produces 600-900 parcels an hour depending on item size: near the top for small flat items, lower for bulky boxed items.
How many orders can one operator pack a day?
At 600 parcels an hour over 7 working hours, about 4,000. In practice the limit is how fast picked items reach the machine.
Which products can it bag?
Anything that fits a 250-550 mm wide mailer: apparel, shoe and cosmetics boxes, accessories, spare parts, books. Item height is checked at the demo.
Do we need proprietary bags?
No. It runs on standard perforated PE mailer rolls from any packaging supplier.
